About Me - Dulwich Counselling

My approach

My background is psychodynamic, which involves exploring how past experiences and unconscious processes may be affecting your life today. I draw on a range of therapeutic techniques to make our work together meaningful and responsive to you, adapting my approach to your own unique needs. Our work may involve listening, reflective dialogue, interpretations and where helpful  exercises to help gain deeper insight. I truly believe that the answer to every hardship lies within us and we all have the potential to evolve and grow.

My Experience & Clinical Leadership

My clinical journey includes working extensively with individuals and groups across schools, colleges, and mental health charities. For the past fifteen years, alongside running my private practice, I have been deeply involved in the charity sector.

For the last nine years, I have served as the Clinical Director at Mind in Enfield and Barnet, a role where clinical leadership meets community impact. I am responsible for overseeing the delivery of all our diverse therapy services, ensuring they remain responsive to the evolving mental health needs of our local residents. Leading our exceptional clinical team is an honor; together, we work to ensure that every individual who turns to us receives effective, compassionate, and highly appropriate counselling.

In my private practice, I provide a compassionate space for:

Open-ended individual counselling & psychotherapy for adults, children and young people.

Couples counselling & relationship therapy to navigate relational dynamics.

Clinical supervision for qualified and trainee counsellors and psychotherapist.

Bespoke training workshops for organisations, businesses, and academic environments.

Before becoming Clinical Director, my work focused on teaching psychology, providing counselling to students and staff in academic environments and counselling in the community.

My Mission and Philosophy

I am especially passionate about supporting our local community. My mission is to build mental resilience and help tackle the stigma that often surrounds reaching out for support. I believe that looking after your mental health and wellbeing should be seen as a strength, and I am dedicated to promoting this awareness among children, young people, and adults from all backgrounds.

Maria Emmanuel

I am an experienced BACP Accredited Counsellor and Psychotherapist, offering a warm, compassionate and confidential space where you can explore your thoughts, feelings and experiences without fear of judgement.

My aim is to help you make sense of difficult emotions, gain a deeper understanding of yourself, and find a way forward that feels right for you. I believe that empathy, acceptance and honesty form the foundation of a strong therapeutic relationship and can create the conditions for meaningful healing, growth and lasting change.

There are times in all our lives when we can feel overwhelmed, stuck, misunderstood or alone. Whether you are experiencing anxiety, low mood, bereavement, relationship difficulties, redundancy, or finding that past experiences have begun to affect your present, you do not have to face these challenges on your own. My role is not to judge you or tell you what to do. Instead, I will work alongside you, helping you to explore your experiences, understand your emotions, and discover your own strengths and ways of moving forward at a pace that feels comfortable for you.
